Bears Close Out Non-Conference Schedule with 5-3 Loss to Bryant

Smithfield, RI- The Brown University softball team (8-25, 5-11 Ivy) suffered a 5-3 loss to in-state rival Bryant (16-21) on a windy Tuesday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex at Conaty Park.

The Bears tallied nine hits, as freshman third baseman Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Junior shortstop Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA), who ranks second in the country in batting average, went 1-for-3, including a homerun, and one RBI.

Three different Bulldogs tallied homeruns today, and was led by a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, by sophomore Amy Weinberg. Weinberg drove in two runs and scored once, and launched her first homerun of the season.

Brown jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs in top of the first when Chavez doubled to left center to bring in Thompson. Just an inning later, Bryant evened the score in the bottom of the second on an Amy Weinberg double that scored senior Lauren McCart.

The Bulldogs tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth on an inside the park homerun by sophomore Aubrey Mable, and then followed with a three-run fifth inning to increase their lead to 5-1. The inning started with a solo homerun to left field by Weinberg, and ended with a two-run bomb by Lindsay Martin to left center.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, junior first baseman Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) hit a solo homerun to right center field to decrease Brown's deficit to three. The Bears added a run in the seventh when junior Avery Silverstein (Woodbrige, CT) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) earned the loss on the mound for the Bears to drop to 6-11 on the season. She gave up four runs on five hits in four innings, and struck out five Bryant batters. Freshman Denise van der Goot (Pasadena, CA) came in for relief pitching the final two innings. She allowed just two hits, walked two and stuck out two.

Bryant's Hart improved to 9-6 with the victory on the mound. She pitched all seven innings and gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out three.

The Bears are back in action in their final games of the 2012 season. Brown will host Yale in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 27, and will then complete the series in New Haven with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 beginning at 12:30 p.m.
