Cornell Softball Takes Two from Brown

Providence, RI- The Brown University softball team dropped two games to Cornell University on Friday afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex. The Bears fell to the Big Red 11-9 in game one, and followed up with an 8-4 loss in game two.

Junior Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) led the offense going 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and three walks, while senior Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) went 5-for-9 with five RBI, a homerun, a double and three runs scored.

The Bears had a 2-0 edge over the Big Red in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring runs in both the third and fourth innings after Strobel and Trish Melvin tallied homeruns.

In the top of the fifth, Cornell's Morgan Cawley sparked a nine-run inning when she hit a three-run bomb to left field to give the Big Red a 9-2 lead.

Brown earned a run in the bottom of the fifth when Thompson doubled to center field to plate Strobel, but Cornell answered with two runs of its own in the top of the sixth to gain an 11-3 lead. Brown made a comeback by scoring three runs in the sixth and cut its deficit to two by scoring three more in the seventh when freshman Misa Wong blasted a three-run homer to right center.

Jenna Stoller earned the win on the mound giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out eight Brown batters. Denise van der Goot dropped to 1-4 on the year after giving up four runs on two hits in four innings.

In game two, Cornell notched a run in the top of the first when Erin Keene hit a single to bring home Jenny Edwards, but the Bears were able to even the score in the bottom of the frame when Strobel's double brought in Thompson.

Cornell tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning when Cawley reached first on an error to score both Kristen Towne and Lauren Bucolo to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Thompson grounded out to second base to bring in two runs.

But Cornell shut down the Bears in the next three innings while scoring five of its own. Bucalo hit a three-run homer to left center in the top of the fourth, and followed it up with a two-run bomb in the sixth to increase Cornell's lead to 8-3. Brown added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Strobel singled to right field

Alyson Onyon earned the win for the Big Red giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings. Jessica Cherness earned the loss giving up five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. Van der Goot came in to relieve Cherness in the sixth, but gave up a two-run homer to her first batter. She gave up one run on two hits in 1.1 innings.

The Bears will challenge Princeton in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m.
