Riverside, CA- The Brown University softball team finished the UC Riverside Tournament with a 4-3 loss to Colorado State on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field. Junior Stephanie Thompson led the Brown offense going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while Trista Chavez went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Brown gained a 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior Kate Strobel hit a double to left field with two outs to bring home Thompson, who got on from a single. Chavez hit a double to left field to bring in Strobel to give Brown a two-run lead.
Colorado bounced right back and tallied a run in the bottom of the second when first baseman Aly Greckel homered to right center. Then, Colorado posted two runs in the third when Greckel tallied her second homerun of the game to put the score at 3-2.
The Rams tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth when Ashley Ortega brought in Chel Biglow to take a two-run lead. The Bears were able to come within one in the seventh inning when Thompson singled to left field to cross Danielle Palms, who got on base from a walk. But that was as close as Brown would come, falling to the Rams, 4-3.
Brown's Jessica Cherness (3-4) received the loss on the mound after giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Colorado State's Kail Snyder improved to 5-0 on the season giving up just three runs on six hits in seven innings.
The Bears will head back east to begin their Ivy League schedule. Brown will travel to the University of Pennsylvania for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on March 30th, followed by a doubleheader at Columbia on March 31.
