Softball Falls to Coppin State, 4-0

Baltimore, MD- The Brown University softball team fell 4-0 to Coppin State in game two of the UMBC Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Kate Strobel and Avery Silverstein tallied the Bears' only two hits this afternoon, as Coppin State combined for six and scored two earned runs.

Coppin State's Paige Arnold earned her second shutout of the season by striking out 10 Bears and did not allow a base hit until the sixth inning as no Brown base runner advanced past second base.

The Eagles tallied their first run in the bottom of the second inning when Candice Van Horn drew a one-out walk and stole second and third base, and scored when Kira Gleason hit a single.

Coppin State earned three more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead to eventually win the game. Patrice Williams hit a double and scored when Emily DeJesus reached on a fielding error to take a 2-0 lead. Then, Arnold reached on an infield single and then stole second, while DeJesus scored from third when the catcher's throw went into the outfield. A passed ball and a wild pitched allowed Arnold to score increasing Coppin State's lead to 4-0 to win the game.

Brown's Sam Brady earned the loss on the mound giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits in four innings. Denise van der Goot pitched the final two innings giving up a run on one hit.

The Bears will take on Mount St. Mary's at 11:25 a.m. and UMBC at 1:35 p.m tomorrow.
