Softball Falls to UTEP, 10-2

El Paso, TX- The Brown University softball team fell 10-2 to host University of Texas El Paso in the second game of the UTEP Invitational on Friday evening at Helen of Troy Field. The Bears are now 1-1 on the young season as UTEP snapped an 11 game skid to improve to 5-11 on the year.

The Miners scored the first run of the game after Chelsea Troupe reached third base on an error by Brown's Stephanie Thompson. Then, Tahla Wade hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Troup and give UTEP an early 1-0 edge.

The Bears roared back in the top of the second inning scoring two runs off of Cynthia Villastrigo. Freshman Kelsey Hom hit a two-RBI single up the middle to bring home Kelsey Williams and Trista Chavez to take a 2-1 lead over the Miners.

UTEP then scored four runs in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth tand kept Brown scoreless for the remainder of the game to put the Bears away and earn the six inning run-rule victory.

Cynthia Villastrigo (4-3) received the win at the mound for the Miners to pick up her fourth victory in the complete game effort. Brown's Denise van der Goot (0-1) gave up four earned runs, scattered 11 hits and walked four batters.

Chavez and Danielle Palms led the offense going 2-for-3 from the plate, as Chavez added one run scored. Stephanie Thompson and Kelsey Hom each added one hit for the Bears.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday against Valparaiso and UTEP, and will conclude the tournament on Sunday vs. Iowa State.
