El Paso, TX - The Brown University softball team picked up its first win of the 2012 season with a 10-5 victory over UTSA (6-9) during the UTEP Invitational on Friday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field. Senior first baseman Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) led the Bears going 3-for-4 from the plate, including two RBI and two runs.
The Bears built a 9-0 lead in just three innings of play as junior Alyssa Caplan (San Mateo, CA) hit a single to third to score Brown's first run of the first inning and sophomore Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, IN) walked to bring in Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) to take a 2-0 lead in the first. Then, Thompson blasted a three-run homer in the second inning to extend the Bears' lead to 5-0 heading into the third frame.
UTSA made a pitching change to start the thing inning, but it didn't stop Brown's offense from rolling. After an error by UTSA's right fielder, both Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) and Trish Melvin (Wexford, PA) scored, and Strobel followed with a homerun to center field to bring in Thompson to give Brown a 9-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
The Roadrunners shut down Brown the next two innings, and went on to score three runs of its own in the fifth when Molly Fichtner's flied out to left field to bring in a run, and then Caitlyn Ivy homered to left center to score the next two to cut the team's deficit to 9-3.
UTSA came within four after scoring two run in the sixth, but the Bears tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame for the final five-run difference.
Brown freshman pitcher Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received the win at the mound for the Bears. She gave up five runs, one earned, on eight hits and struck out three batters and walked two. Sam Brady pitched 1.2 innings for the Bears. She allowed just one hit, struck out one and walked one in eight batters faced.
The Bears will now challenge UTEP this evening and will start off Saturday morning with a game against Valparaiso.
