Bears Split with Dartmouth College

Hanover, NH-Ten Bears scored runs to help lead the Brown softball team to a 13-0 victory over Dartmouth College in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon in Hanover. But the Big Green were victorious in game two after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 6-3 win over the Bears. The split moved the Bears to 11-17 and 6-8 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth is now 15-16 and 8-6 in the league.

Game One

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Kristie Chin hit a two RBI double to center field to score both Kate Strobel and Kelsey Williams. Brown built its lead to 7-0 in the third inning when Alyssa Caplan hit a two RBI single to center field and a throwing error brought in the third. Then, Trish Melvin hit a two RBI homerun to center field to take the seven run advantage.

Both teams were scoreless for the next three innings, but the Bears lit up for six runs in the seventh to shut out the Big Green. The inning started when Strobel homered to left field, and Melvin singled to right field to score Chin. Next, Avery Silverstein singled to second base to bring home Nina Melvin, and a single by Jen Kries brought in Trish Melvin, and a Dartmouth throwing error crossed Silverstein. Brown's last run came in when Kelsey Williams singled to shortstop to plate Kries and win the ballgame 13-0.

Trish Melvin led the Brown offense going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, and Chin went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Also, Kelsey Williams went 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.

Kristie Chin earned the win on the mound to improve to 10-9 overall. In six inning, Chin allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out three batters. Trish Melvin came in for relief and struck out one batter and gave up one hit.

Game Two

Dartmouth got on the scoreboard first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Noelle Ramirez doubled down the right field line to score the innings first run and a ground out to second base brought in the second.

But the Bears came back by scoring a run in the fourth when Strobel rallied with two outs with a homerun to center field, and took a 3-2 in the fifth with Trish Melvin hit a two RBI homerun to left center.

The Big Green evened the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Hicks doubled to right field to bring home Molly Khalil. The Big Green kept the Bears scoreless for the remainder of the game, but Dartmouth was able to tally three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Trish Melvin pitched 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on four hits, but it was Chin who earned the loss after fiving up three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

The Bears will match up against Dartmouth again tomorrow beginning at 2:00 p.m.
