Philadelphia, PA- The Brown University softball team lost its first two Ivy League games this afternoon to the University of Pennsylvania. The Quakers defeated Brown 6-2 after a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, and followed it up with a 5-0 win in game two.
Penn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bears were able to come back and score a run in the fourth after a Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) homerun, and another in the seventh after Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) doubled to even the score 2-2. However, in the bottom of the seventh the Quakers stormed back when freshman Brooke Coloma hit a grand slam to score four runs and win the game, 6-2.
Junior Kristie Chin (Katy, TX) pitched 6 innings for the Bears and gave up three runs and seven hits, and freshman Liz DiMascio (Braintree, MA) came in for relief to pitch in the seventh. DiMascio was handed the loss after giving up three runs and a hit to move to 5-4 on the year.
The Bears couldn't get their offense rolling in the second game of the double header, falling 5-0 to the Quakers. Penn scored a run in both the first and second inning and then brought in three runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead and eventually win the game.
DiMascio (5-5) took the loss at the mound after pitching 2.1 innings and giving up four runs and four hits. Chin came in for the final 3.2 innings and allowed just five hits and one run.
Rothamel led the offense this afternoon going 2-for-5 from the plate, including a double, and had one RBI. Strobel followed with a 2-for-6 performance, including a homerun in game one, and also one RBI and one run scored.
