Hampton, VA- The Brown University softball team earned a split during the first day of the Lady Pirate Classic hosted by Hampton University on Friday. The Bears came up short against Central Connecticut falling 6-5, but rallied in game two in a 12-1 five-inning win against Coppin State.
The Bears made a late rally against the Blue Devils and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come within one run of sending the game into extra innings. But Brown came up short to lose 6-5. Freshman Avery Silverstein went 2-of-2 with one walk and one run scored, and sophomore Sandra Mastrangelo went 1-of-2 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.
But the bats came alive for the Bears in game two, as the squad rolled to a 12-1 five-inning win against Coppin State. Leading the offense was freshman Alyssa Caplan, who went 3-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI and freshman Stephanie Thompson went 3-for-4, which included a double, two runs scored and one RBI.
Senior captain Katie Rothamel had a great day at the plate for the Bears as well, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one double, one homerun and six RBI. Also adding to the explosive offense was Kate Strobel's 2-of-4 performance from the plate, which included two doubles and two runs scored.
Rookie Liz DiMascio earned the win in the circle after allowing just three hits, one unearned run and she struck out 12 Coppin State batters.
