Dec. 15, 2008
PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown women's soccer head coach Phil Pincince has announced captains for the 2009 season in a vote by members of the team. Rising seniors Bridget Ballard (Los Angeles, CA) and Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) were selected by their peers to lead the Bears next season.
A two-time All-Ivy honoree, Ballard earned Second Team All-Ivy honors this season after earning Honorable Mention honors a year ago. She started all 17 games in 2008 at center-med and played all but 15 minutes of Brown's season. A dominant player in the midfield, Ballard finished the season with four points on one goal and two assists. She was also recognized for her off-field achievements, earning CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District honors. In three seasons, Ballard has started all but four games (due to injury), playing nearly every minute of every game during this time. She will enter her final season with 11 points (3g, 5a) in 47 career games, all starts.
Kim has also been a significant contributor in each of her three seasons, playing in 48 of 51 games, missing three this season due to injury, and starting 45 of the 48. She has consistently been among the top five scorers on the team each season, finishing both the 2006 and 2008 seasons ranked fourth on the team with 12 and seven points, respectively. She will enter her final season with 24 points (8g, 8a) and ranked 20th all-time at Brown with eight career assists.
The Bears will open their 2009 spring season in February. Brown's 2009 season-opener is tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 4, at home against Boston College.
