Lanzire's Late Goal Leaves Cornell Seeing Red
Just 50 seconds into the game, Kristin Ferrell (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) took a corner kick that bounced off Cornell keeper Meghan Cauzillo (Northville, MI/Northville) into open space. Brown's Page Weller (Belvedere, CA/Branson) promptly passed the ball to a waiting Lanzire, who tapped the ball in for her second goal in as many games.
With 23:55 remaining, Sarah Olson (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who is second on the Big Red team in scoring, booted the ball into the left corner of the net to tie the game.
However, as the minutes were winding down, Lanzire struck again. She received a long pass from Ferrell and dribbled the ball downfield, finding herself one-on-one with Cornell's keeper. She fired the ball past the goalie, tallying the game-winner with 5:56 remaining.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has allowed just five goals on the season. Markle stopped seven first half shots, while Gervais made three saves in the second half. Cauzillo stopped six Brown shots for the Big Red, as the Bears outshot Cornell 20-18.
The Bears, who need two more wins to tie the school record for wins in a season, will host Boston College, ranked 4th in the Northeast Region, on Wednesday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m.
