Rhode Island Hands Brown Second Consecutive Loss

Providence, R.I. (Oct. 15, 2000) -- Erica Young (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) scored her third goal of the season to lead visiting Rhode Island (13-1-1, 4-1-1) to a 2-0 victory over Brown (9-2, 2-1) in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest at Stevenson Field on October 15.

After nearly 72 minutes of scoreless action, Young received a pass from Heather Kasperek (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) on the left hand side, and booted the ball over Brown keeper Sarah Gervais' (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy) head and into the opposite corner.

With about 18 minutes left in the game, the Brown squad did not give up. However, with just over three minutes remaining in the contest, Gina Rosen (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) put the game out of reach for the Bears when she scored from 25 yards out on the right side, firing the ball into the upper left corner of the net.

The victory gives the Rams their13th win this year for a new school record wins in a season at Rhode Island. The Rams tied the record with a 5-2 victory over George Washington at home on Friday night.

Junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) stopped seven Rhode Island shots in 45 minutes, while freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy) made three saves in the second half. Sophomore Jamie Epperlein (Woodbine, MA/Glenelg), who earned her third shutout of the season, made 10 saves for the Rams.

The Bears, who are looking to end a two-game losing streak, will travel to Providence for a non-league contest on Wednesday, October 17. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.
