# 20 Brown Extends Unbeaten Streak to Nine GamesProvidence, R.I. (Oct. 6, 2000) -- Kristin Ferrell (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) scored her second goal in as many games and added an assist to lead Brown (9-0, 2-0) to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Lions (2-6-2, 0-3) of Columbia in an Ivy League contest at Stevenson Field on October 6.
Just 2:35 into the game, Ferrell took advantage of a loose ball that had bounced off the Columbia keeper, Janine Ierardi (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill Academy). Standing alone to the left of the goal, Ferrell knocked the ball in to the opposite corner to get the Bears on the board.
In the 17th minute, the Bears almost gave up their first goal in over 418 minutes of action, when junior Cori Cassens (West Hartford, CT/Hall) beat a Brown defender and pulled junior keeper Mary Jo Markle (West Cehster, PA/Henderson) out of the net. However, in an effort to keep Markle at the top of the nation with a perfect 0.00 goals against average, senior sweeper Michaela Rooney (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) stepped into the net and kicked the ball out to keep the shutout alive.
Four minutes later, at the 21:12 mark, freshman Molly Cahan (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) added an insurance goal off a Ferrell corner kick to give the Bears a 2-0 halftime lead.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, Cahan struck again to put the game out of reach and with just over ten minutes remaining in the game, junior Laura Iden (Kenilworth, NJ/Union Catholic) tapped in a loose ball off a corner kick, securing the 4-0 victory.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of Markle and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has not been scored upon in 491:18, dating back to the 2-1 victory at Fairfield on September 13. Markle stopped two first half shots, while Gervais made one save in the second half. Ierardi stopped 11 Brown shots for the Lions, as the Bears outshot Columbia 23-6.
The Bears, ranked 20th in the country by Soccer America and 4th in the Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will travel to Princeton next Friday, October 13 to battle the Tigers for first place in the Ivy League. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
