Carney and Shapira Named 2007 Captains

Sept. 5, 2007

PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown women's soccer seniors Kerrilynn Carney (North Kingstown, RI) and Julia Shapira (Los Angeles, CA), an Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection a year ago, have been named captains for the 2007 season. The duo started all 17 games in the backfield last season, helping to guide the Bears to 9-4-4 record. Along the way, Brown also posted four shutouts and earned a team goals against average of 1.17.

Carney made the team as a walk-on in the fall of 2004 and has been a mainstay in the backfield for the past two seasons, starting 33 of the Bears 34 games during that time, while playing in all 34. In 35 career games, Carney has 3-2-8 numbers, including 2-2-6 totals last season.

Shapira made an immediate impact as a rookie in 2004, playing in 12 games and earning three starts. An injury suffered that spring forced her to miss the entire 2005 season, but she rebounded last year to start all 17 games, consistently coming up with big plays in the backfield to thwart the opposition's attack.

The Bears open their 2007 season on Thursday night, September 6, when they host #9 Boston College at 7:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on Brownbears.com. Fans can listen to the game for free or watch all the action live for $6.
