Women's Soccer Shuts Out Army, 3-0WEST POINT, NY (Sept. 4) -- Senior co-captain Bekah Splaine's penalty shot in the 17th minute proved all that was needed as Brown's 3-0 season opening victory snapped Army's two-game winning streak in a women's soccer match at Clinton Field Monday afternoon.
The Lady Knights, who outshot their first two opponents by a 65-8 margin, were held to just eight shots to Brown's 17. The Bears scored twice in the first half to put the game away. After Splaine got the Bears on the board at the 17:12 mark, sophomore Caitlin Carey added an insurance goal when the volleyed the ball off a feed from freshman Molly Cahan into the net in the 34th minute.
Junior Laura Iden put the game out of reach as she scored on an assist from freshman Michaela Sewall with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Jo Markle stopped four shots in 45 minutes of action, while freshman keeper Sarah Gervais made one save in the second half for the combined shutout.
Brown (1-0) heads to Cape Cod this weekend to participate in the ECAC Tournament. The Bears will face Colgate on Friday the 8th at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Boston University on Sunday the 10th in a 2:00 p.m. game.
