On Tuesday, August 19, the Bears ate breakfast in Munich, Germany, before heading off to Switzerland. The team had time to stop in Luzern, Switzerland for lunch, shopping and a brisk walk around, before going to Hotel Krone in Giswel, Switzerland. At this Hotel the Brown team had its own hotel lodge. This was a very different and impressive experience as the lodge had magnificent views of the Swiss Alps.
Their pre-game meal was held in the main lodge and they headed to their fourth game of the trip, against FC Berne, a Swiss 1st Division Team. For this match the Bears were allowed to play in the main 15,000-seat stadium, which was quite a treat the players. Brown cruised to a 7-0 win over the team, improving its record in Europe to 3-0-1.
Sophomores Jamie Johnson and Dana Muhlfelder led the bears with two goals each, while sophomore Meghan Schreck, junior Kim Hagner, and senior Rachel Roberts each added one. For Johnson and Muhlfelder, it was their second and third goals of the trip. Following the game, the Bears traveled back through the Swiss Alps to Hotel Krone for a pizza party in the main lodge.
On Wednesday, the Bears again enjoyed an early breakfast and then traveled to the Lutschine River, a Class 3 river, in Interlocken, Switzerland for a white water rafting trip, which was an amazing experience for all and an A++ rated event. Brown occupied four rafts as the team ventured down the cold, cold, cold, cold, 39-degree water.
Some players fell over, others jumped over and some managed to stay dry. At the end of the river all players were accounted for. After drying out and a few snacks with the river guides, the Bears headed off to Interlaken for lunch and free time. Following lunch, Brown was treated to the most magnificent four-hour bus ride through the Swiss Alps into Lake Como, Italy. This ride took us by waterfalls from the glaciers, blue water lakes, class 5 rivers, wildlife, and the windiest roads we had ever traveled. At this point they had to say goodbye to their wonderful tour guide Henrick Femer.
The Bears arrived at Hotel Como at 5:30 PM and said goodbye to their best busdriver of the trip: Hans! Their new tour guide, Christina Moreschi, met them and Brown enjoyed a typical 2.5-hour Italian meal followed by free time.
Following a good night's sleep, the Bears ate breakfast at the hotel and then went on a guided cruise of Lake Como to Bellagio where their guide pointed out many interesting villas: Versaci, Mussolini, George Clooney, in addition to where George Lucas filmed the final star wars picture. Once in Bellagio the players had time to explore, before going back to Como for a free afternoon. The Bears enjoyed another 2.5-hour Italian meal, and headed to bed early, as they leave for Venice at 7:00 Friday morning.
