Brown Women's Soccer Announces Team Awards

(Feb. 19, 2001) -- The Brown women's soccer team held its annual season-ending banquet Thursday, February 15, and six different individuals were honored with team awards. The banquet was held at Camille's Roman Garden in Federal Hill (Providence, RI).

Senior Page Weller (Belvedere, CA), junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA) and sophomore Amy Albro (Seattle, WA) shared Dobson-Kay Coaches Award. The award is presented annually to the player(s) chosen by the coach for outstanding comtribution, dedication and sportsmanship. The award is in honor of Stan Dobson '58 and Gene Kay '58 for their strong support and promotion of the women's soccer program.

The Margeson Team Spirit Award is presented annually to the player who exhibits the most team spirit as voted by the players. It is in honor of Jane Margeson, "Soccer Enthusiast," mother of Bill Margeson '37, Hall of Famer (soccer '70). This year's recipient was senior Raffaella Kalishman (Wilton, CT), who was the recipient of this award for the third straight year, something which may never be accomplished again.

Junior forward Kim Lanzire (Bristol, RI) was selected as recipient of the Ridgely Most Valuable Player Award. The award is presented annually to the Most Valuable Player as voted by the players and is in honor of Professor and Mrs. Beverly Ridgely for their outstanding contributions to women's soccer.

The Sarah Nicholson Memorial Award, initiated in 1996 and given to the senior on the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of themselves to the good of the team, was awarded to co-captain Michaela Rooney (East Greenwich, RI).

The Brown team completed the 2000 season with a 13-4-0 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season, and a 5-2, third place finish in Ivy play. Sixteen letterwinners return to next year's squad.
