PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Lindsay Cunningham (Cumberland, RI) and senior Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) scored back-to-back goals just seven minutes into the second half to break open a 1-0 game and help lead the Brown women's soccer team (9-3-3, 3-1-1) to a 4-1 victory over Cornell (2-11-1, 1-4-0) in an Ivy League contest on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. The win is Brown's fifth straight as it is now unbeaten in its past six games (5-0-1), while outscoring its opposition 16-5 during that span.
Brown dominated the first half of the game, outshooting Cornell 15-6 and holding a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) nearly gave Brown a 1-0 lead at 24:35, but her shot on a breakaway was saved by Cornell's Taylor Hendren to keep the Bears off the board. Just five minutes later, at 29:55, the Bears earned three corner kicks in a row, the only three of the game, and came away with two good scoring opportunities. The first one came on the first corner when freshman Bridget Ballard's (Los Angeles, CA) header nailed the crossbar. Then, on the third corner, freshman Paige Reidy (Honeoye Falls, NY) fired a shot into the box, but her attempt was blocked by a Cornell defender as the score remained tied at 0-0.
The Bears' pressure finally paid off at 41:59 when Mansfield was pulled down inside the box, setting up a Brown penalty kick. Senior leading scorer Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) buried the shot into the lower right corner to give Brown a 1-0 lead, with her third goal on a penalty kick in as many games. The goal also increased her scoring streak to five games, scoring 20 (9g,2a) of her 33 points in that span.
Using the momentum from the goal on the penalty kick, Brown wasted little time in increasing its lead to 2-0, scoring just 49 seconds into the second half. Mansfield served a high cross into the box and Cunningham headed the ball over Hendren's head, scoring her second goal in as many games. Just 6:14 later, at 52:03, Mansfield gave Brown a 3-0 lead when she one-timed a pass from junior Kerrilynn Carney (North Smithfield, RI) into the top left corner of the net from the top of the box.
The Big Red caught Brown just 1:34 later when Eva Dixon fired home a cross from Whitney Hughes to come to within two goals, 3-1. However, that was as close as Cornell would get as Brown did not allow another shot on net for the remainder of the game.
Kim sealed the win for Brown at 77:47 when she blasted a free-kick from 20 yards out over the wall of Cornell defenders, nailing the top right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Freshman Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) recorded one save in net in 83:28, before giving way to freshman Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA), who saw her first collegiate action and played the final 6:32. Brown returns to action on Sunday, October 29, when it travels to Philadelphia for a 1:00 p.m. Ivy contest against Penn.
