PROVIDENCE, RI - The University of Rhode Island (9-3-2) got three goals from three different players and a two-assist night from Thorunn Jonsdottir to post a 3-1 victory over the Brown women's soccer team (3-8-1) on Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field. Senior Julia Shapira (Los Angeles, CA) scored her second goal in three games to lead the Bears.
URI held a 1-0 lead at halftime after outshooting Brown, 11-7, during the first half and earning four corner kicks to Brown's none. The Rams got on the board at 29:41 when Dora Larusdottir headed the ball past sophomore Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) for the 1-0 lead.
During the second half, Brown outshot Rhode Island, 6-5, and also had more corner kicks, 3-2, but the Rams scored off of two counter attacks to win the game. URI earned a 2-0 lead at 53:32 when Amanda Thomas went backdoor with her cross from the right wing and Kassandra Spitler had the easy tap-in at the far post.
The Bears made it a one-goal game with just over five minutes remaining on a broken corner kick play. Sophomore Paige Reidy (Honeoye-Falls, NY) served the ball into the box where junior Lindsay Cunningham (Cumberland, RI) attempted a header that went wide of the net. URI attempted to clear the ball, but it came back out to sophomore Meghan Robinson (Minneapolis, MN) on the right side. Robinson served the ball backdoor where Shapira lobbed it over URI goalie Jackie Fede. The assist was Robinson's first career point.
However, just three minutes later, at 87:43, Deb Nelson put the game out of reach, finishing the tail-end of a two-on-one break with Jonsdottir.
Yellin finished the night with three saves, while Fede recorded four saves in net for URI. The Bears return to Ivy action this Sunday, October 21, when they travel to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell at 2:00 p.m.
