The women's soccer team defeated Providence College 3-1 improving its record to 5-2-2 on the season. Brown battled PC for a solid 90 minutes, with both teams working hard to control the ball. Bruno was led by senior Michaela Sewall (Newton, MA) who scored twice for the bears, both textbook headers at crucial times of the game.
Brown's defense was led by senior Amy Baumann (Wyncote, PA), senior Kelsey Crew (Seattle, WA) and junior Michelle Sriqongtong (Rosemead, CA) who stopped PC numerous times in Bruno's defensive end. Junior Kim Hagner (San Fransisco, CA) and senior captain Rachel Roberts (Sudburry, MA) fought hard for key shots, rattling PC's defense and starting goal keeper Caroline Haines.
Sewall scored first for the Bears at 36:48 off of a long throw-in from freshman Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ). Brown kept the lead throughout the rest of the first half. PC opened the second half with increased intensity in pushing the ball to their attack, however it was Hagner who stepped up at 60:27, and buried the ball in the back of the net off of a deflection from a shot by Roberts. PC's Shannon McMorrow retaliated with the Friars' only goal of the match at 63:59.
Brown continued to push the ball up the field and test PC's defense. Sewall headed in her second goal of the night at 83:47 when she received a pass off of a free kick by senior Julie Herrold (La Crescenta, CA) Herrold outside the box.
Freshman Christina Parodi (Alamo, CA) made three saves for the Bears in her collegiate debut to earn the win.
Brown continues action in its second Ivy game, Saturday Oct 4th, at Columbia University at 2:30pm.
