Cunningham's Second Goal in Three Games Lifts Bears to 2-1 Win over Army
Sept. 30, 2007
WEST POINT, NY - Junior Lindsay Cunningham's (Cumberland, RI) shot from 18 yards out in the 82nd minute broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Brown women's soccer team (2-6-1) to a 2-1 victory over Army (4-5-1) on Sunday afternoon at Clinton Field.
The Black Knights, who outshot Brown, 25-10, came close to tying the game after Cunningham's goal, firing off five straight shots in the final eight minutes, but four were off target and sophomore Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) made her third, and final, save of the contest on the fifth shot to help the Bears post the win.
Junior Jamie Mize (Washington, DC) gave Brown a 1-0 lead when she scored her first career goal in the 17th minute, heading in a cross from senior Anne Friedland (Toronto, ONT), who picked up her third assist in as many games.
Cunningham nearly put the Bears up 2-0 two minutes later, but she was denied by Army's Alex Lostetter, and then three minutes before the break, Lostetter beat senior Kate Ashforth (New Canaan, CT) to a lose ball to end the threat of a one-on-one.
Sarah Goss scored the Black Knights' goal, tying the contest at 1-1 in the 69th minute, when she beat Yellin with a header off an Army free kick.
The Bears return home this weekend to host Princeton in a 4:00 p.m. game on Saturday at Stevenson Field. The game video and audio will be streamed live on the internet.
