PROVIDENCE, RI - The Fairfield Stags (7-1) scored back-to-back goals to open the first half en route to a 5-2 victory over Brown (1-3) in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest at Brown University Wednesday evening.
Just 3:08 into the contest, freshman Megan King (Charlestown, MA) headed the ball into the net off a long pass into the box from senior Erin Porter (North Vancouver, Canada). Less than eight minutes later, sophomore Maureen Miller (East Rockaway, NY) extended Fairfield's lead to 2-0, firing the ball past senior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA).
Sophomore Kristin Ferrell (Concorc, MA) and senior Allyson Schwerdt (Setauket, NY) took advantage of a breakaway on the left wing and Ferrell converted on a shot to the upper right corner of the net to get Brown on the board at 22:57.
However, just as soon as Brown appeared to be making a comeback, the Stags added back-to-back goals, the game-winner from Danielle Della Corna (Westlake Village, CA) at 24:53 and a Robyn Brady (Brookfield, CT) goal at 26:20 to take a 4-1 lead heading into the break.
Fairfield added their fifth, and final goal, just nine minutes into the second stanza, when sophomore Lindsay Pulito (Kensington, CT) scored on a header off a corner kick from JulieAnne Forman (Massapequa Park, NY).
Brown's final goal came in the 83rd minute when the Bears were awarded a penalty kick after Schwerdt was taken down in the box. Sophomore Julie Herrold (La Crescenta, CA) converted on the shot for Brown's second goal.
Fairfield's Dana Comuniello (Massapequa Park, NY) made nine saves for the Stags, while Markle had two in the first half and sophomore Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) made three saves in the second half for Brown.
The Bears will continue action on Friday, September 28, when they host Marist in a non-league game at 4:00 on Stevenson Field.
