Sept. 25, 2007
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Kellie Slater (Golden, CO) scored her first career goal and junior Lindsay Cunningham (Cumberland, RI) netted her first of the season to lead the Brown women's soccer team (1-5-1) to its first win of the season, a 2-0 shutout over Maine (2-4-2) on Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field. Senior Anne Friedland (Toronto, ONT) had a strong game in the midfield for Brown, picking up two assists.
Brown dominated the game from the outset, but it wasn't until the second half that the Bears really took control, doubling up the Black Bears in shots, 14-7, during the final 45 minutes of play.
The two teams were even in shots during the first half, but Maine had the better of the scoring opportunities. The first came in the 19th minute on the Black Bears third corner of the half. After the ball was served into the box, Laura Martel got her head on the ball and had sophomore goalie Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA), who finished with two saves, beat. But senior Mollie Mattuchio (Pepperell, MA), playing in her first game of the season after missing the first six with an injury, timed her jump perfectly and headed the ball out of harms way just before it could cross the goal line.
Then just six minutes later, Maine took back-to-back shots, one from Kim Stephenson and the other from Martel that both hit the crossbar as the Black Bears were kept off the board.
The momentum shifted in the second half with Brown outshooting Maine 4-1 during the opening 7:36. Finally, 9:10 into the half, the Bears' persistence paid off. Friedland brought the ball up the right wing. Without an opening to serve the ball into the box, she played it back to senior Kerrilynn Carney (North Kingstown, RI), who was just in front of the 50. Carney's long service found Slater on the far side and she settled the ball, before turning and firing a shot that found the opposite corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Exactly three minutes later, at 57:10, the Bears nearly went up 2-0 when sophomore Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) and Slater both had shots saved by Jasmine Phillips, who finished the night with seven saves.
The Bears eventually scored the insurance goal in the 78th minute when Cunningham notched her first of the season, scoring off assists from Friedland and sophomore Paige Reidy (Honeoye Falls, NY). Cunningham's goal was nearly identical to Slater's as her shot from the top left of the box found the far corner.
Maine battled to get back into the game, but the Brown defense held on to keep the Black Bears off the board and collect Bruno's second shutout and first victory of the season.
After seven straight non-league games to open the season, the Bears open Ivy play this Friday when they travel to New York to face Columbia, the 2006 Ivy Champions, in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
