Rhode Island Hands Women's Soccer It's First Loss Of The Season
Sept. 20, 2001
SOUTH KINGSTON, RI - The University of Rhode Island (3-1) handed the women's soccer team (1-1) it's first loss of the season, defeating the Bears 2-0 in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest at The URI Soccer Complex Wednesday night.
The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half before the Rams got on the board first when senior Shannon Kittelson notched an unassisted goal at the 41:28 mark. That would be the only goal the Rams would need, however, as the Rhode Island defense held Brown to only six shots on goal. Junior Gina Rosen added the second goal for the Rams at 63:24 when she connected on a pass from senior Catherine Zanni for the 2-0 lead.
Rhode Island keeper, Jamie Epperlein made two saves in goal for the Rams, while senior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) made two saves for Brown in the first half and sophomore Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy) stopped three shots in the second half.
The Bears will travel Harvard this weekend to take on the Crimson in a 12:00 noon game. The contest is the Ivy League opener for both teams.
