DAVIS, CA - The Brown University women's soccer team (4-4-0) used a balanced attack and solid team defense en route to a 3-0 victory over UC Davis (2-4-1) on Sunday afternoon, as the Bears salvaged a split with their two West Coast opponents.
Brown had the first scoring opportunity in the first minute of play when junior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) found an open Susie Keller (Cincinnati, OH) just outside the box, but the sophomore's shot attempt sailed wide of the net.
The Aggies controlled the pace of play for the next 15 minutes, but after that, Brown settled in and kept the ball on the attack for the next four minutes.
The two teams battled back-and-forth until the 25:00 mark when senior Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA) beat the Davis goalie to a loose ball, and with the goalie out of the net, Moos fired a shot that would have easily gone into the far corner. However, a Davis defender was on the goal line to save the ball from going into the net and keep Brown off the board.
On the ensuing corner kick, senior Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA) fired the ball into the box and it sailed through the goalie's hands before sophomore Kerrilynn Carney (North Smithfield, RI) walked the loose ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 Brown lead.
Carney's goal, which was the first of her career, would prove to be the game-winner, but less than two minutes later, at 26:40, Schreck gave Brown a 2-0 lead. After receiving the ball from junior Kathleen Waddell (Minnetonka, MN) on the right sideline, Schreck beat two defenders, pulling the Davis goalie out of the net, before punching the ball into the opposite corner from 12 yards out.
After the break, the Bears saw a flurry of UC Davis scoring attempts early in the second half, but Brown played strong team defense to keep the Aggies off the board.
Brown added its final goal of the game when Waddell's shot off a Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) flip throw was saved. The rebound bounced right to Moos' feet inside the box, and she scored on her follow-up shot to the near post.
Senior Hilary Wilson (Monterey, CA) recorded seven saves in net to pick up her third shutout of the season. The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 24, when they host Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. in their 2005 Ivy League opener.
