Moos' First Goal of the Season Lifts Bears to 2-1 Overtime Victory Over UNH
Sept. 17, 2004
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University (3-2-0) women's soccer team snapped a two-game skid on Friday evening, while remaining perfect (3-0-0) at Stevenson Field this year, with a 2-1 overtime victory over the University of New Hampshire (2-3-2). Sophomore Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) scored her first goal of the season just 5:06 into the first 10-minute sudden-death overtime to lift the Bears' to the win.
The Bears and the Wildcats both battled for ball control and positioning early in the game, but it was Brown that would put the first goal on the board, less than 20:00 into the contest. After steady offensive pressure by the Bears in the 18th minute, the ball bounced off a UNH defender to sophomore Kathleen Waddell (Minnetonka, MN), who was nearly 40 yards out. Waddell quickly fired off a shot, and lofted the ball high and over the Wildcats goalie for the 1-0 Brown lead at 17:25.
Bruno held onto the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half, and for nearly the first 15 minutes of the second half. However, UNH scored its only goal of the contest at 59:40, in a similar fashion to the Bears' first goal. After sophomore Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) attempted to clear the ball out of the Brown zone, the ball landed at the feet of Julie Wernig, who slid the ball past junior Hillary Wilson (Monterey, CA), knotting the game at 1-1.
The remainder of the second half remained scoreless, sending the game into a sudden-death overtime. The Wildcats controlled the early part of the first period, but Moos capitalized on the Bears' only shot of the overtime for the 2-1 win. Junior co-captain Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA) trapped the ball with her body about 60 yards from the goal and sent the ball to the feet of Waddell at the 50. Waddell found Moos, who dribbled through the defense crossing in front of the goal, before cutting back in towards the net and sliding the ball past the keeper at 95:06, clearing the Brown bench.
In net, Wilson stopped 13 shots for the Bears, who continue action on Sunday, September 19, when they travel Boston for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Boston University.
