Brown Women's Soccer Beats Northeastern 3-0

Sept. 17, 2003

The Brown Women's Soccer team beat Northeastern University, 3-0, Wednesday night at Stevenson Field. The Bears posted their third consecutive shutout at home, and forth this season.

Brown opened the scoring 26:16 when sophomore Meghan Shreck (Hudson, MA) pounded the ball directly over the Northeastern goalie's head into the back of the net, off of a skillful cross from sophomore Tory Manchester (Costa Mesa, CA). The rest of the first half saw senior Molly Cahan (Encino, CA), and senior Kristin Ferrell (Concord, MA) transitioning the ball upfield and out of Brown's defensive end.

The second half of the game saw Brown come out with unyielding intensity that the Bears held throughout the rest of the game. Schreck and freshman Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) led the bears in pressuring the Huskies' defense and keeping the ball predominately in Brown's attacking end. Freshman Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) gave Brown numerous opportunities towards goal with her unblockable corner throw-ins.

Brown continued to force the ball on attack and had a few nail-biting breakaways forcing the Huskies' defense to make some big plays. Senior Rachel Roberts (Sudbury, MA) ran hard creating opportunities in front of Northeastern's goal. Moos put the Bears on the board again at 67:48. Senior Julie Herrold (La Crescenta, CA) took the corner kick for the Bears which Sewell was able to control and head directly to Moos' feet for the easy fake, shot and goal.

Continuing to control the ball and tempo of the game, Brown sealed the win with a goal from Sewall at 73:04. Sewall headed the corner throw-in from Mansfield into a wide-open net.

Senior goalie Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) ended the game making 14 saves, many of which were diving, crowd-dazzling stops. Gervais has now recorded her fourth shutout for the 2003 season and third consecutive at home on Stevenson Field.

Brown continues action on Saturday, September 20th at the University of New Hampshire. Game time is 7pm.
