STORRS, CT - The 23rd ranked University of Connecticut women's soccer team (3-2-0) scored just 1:46 into the game and never looked back, handing Brown (0-3-0) a 5-1 loss in the second game of the UConn Classic. Sophomore Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) scored her first career goal for the Bears.
UConn scored 1:46 into the game when Meghan Schnur found a wide open Annie Yi in front of the box. Yi one timed a shot into the back of the goal to give the Huskies the quick 1-0 lead. Connecticut then made it 2-0 only eight minutes later and then added a third goal in the 21st minute to hold onto a 3-0 lead at the half.
Brown tried to get back in the game three minutes into the second half when senior Kate Ashforth (New Canaan, CT) got an open look at the goal, but goalie Stephanie Labbe was in position to make the stop. Connecticut gained the momentum right back with a goal in the 52nd minute and added its final tally of the evening 10 minutes later at 62:22.
Manners found the back of the net just 22 seconds later at 62:44, scoring off a UConn turnover for the 5-1 final. Junior Alex Michael (Pacific Palisades, CA) earned an assist on the goal.
Sophomore Meghan Robinson (Minneapolis, MN) earned her first career start tonight, while freshman Joyce Chun (Irvine, CA) became the fifth member of the Bears' Class of 2011 to make her collegiate debut.
For the game UConn outshot Brown 19-8 with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) recorded five saves in net.
The Bears continue action at the UConn Classic on Sunday at 12:00 noon when they face Central Connecticut State, winners of a 1-0 decision over Fairfield earlier today.
