Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight With 3-2 Victory Over Colgate

Sept. 15, 2002

HARWICH, MA - Brown University (2-1-1) came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Colgate (1-3-1), 3-2, in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest on the final day of the ECAC Tournament held at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Tory Manchester (Costa Mesa, CA) started the scoring with her first career goal at the 30:10 mark of the first half. Classmate Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA), who scored her first career goal against Fairfield on Friday, earned the assist as the Bears took a 1-0 lead. However, the Raiders knotted the game less then ten minutes later, and the teams headed into the break in a 1-1 deadlock.

Colgate increased its lead to 2-1 at the 61:56 mark, but from there it was all Brown, as senior Laura Iden (Kennilworth, NJ) tied the game for the Bears just 5:29 later after collecting the ball from classmate Caitlin Carey (Boxford, MA). Iden added the goal to a 1-1-3 performance against Fairfield and Carey added the assist to a 1-0-2 outing against the Stags.

However, Carey and the Bears weren't finished yet. The score remained tied 2-2 for the next 9:35, when Carey converted on a pass from junior Michaela Sewall (Newton, MA) with 13 minutes remaining to put Brown up, 3-2. Sewall, who completed a 1-2-4 weekend and her third game in a row with at least one point, earned ECAC Hy-line Player of the Game.

With the help of the entire defense, junior Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) shut down the Colgate offense for the remaining 13 minutes and the Bears earned their second consecutive win. The Bears continue action on Wednesday evening when they host intra-state rival Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
