Bears Fall to #26 Cal Poly, 1-0, in Defensive Battle
Sept. 10, 2004
HARWICH, MA - The Brown women's soccer team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, a 1-0 decision to #26 Cal Poly in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon in game two of the first day of action at the ECAC Classic.
With Brown playing three freshman throughout the defensive middle of the field, at sweeper, center back, and center mid, the Mustangs controlled play in the scoreless first half, outshooting Brown, 15-0.
Junior Hillary Wilson (Monterey, CA) and the entire Brown defense remained tough during the first half and throughout the game, as Wilson made 10 saves during the first frame.
However, with 28:20 remaining in the game, the Mustangs took advantage of a corner kick as Sharon Day headed the ball past Wilson, ending her shutout streak at 241:40. The goal would prove to be all the Mustangs would need as the Bears, unable to penetrate the Cal Poly defense, notched just two shots on goal for the game.
Wilson finished the game with 21 saves, earning Player of the Game honors. Brown returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 when it faces Hofstra, winner of a 2-1 overtime contest over Maine in Friday's first game.
