Women's Soccer Opens Season With 5-0 Shutout Over ProvidencePROVIDENCE, RI - Senior co-captain Kim Lanzire (Bristol RI/Mt. Hope) scored the game winning goal and added an assist to lead the Bears (1-0) to a 5-0 victory over Providence (3-1) in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest at Brown University Sunday afternoon.
With 22:36 remaining in the first half Lanzire beat her defender to a lose ball, took sophomore Caroline Haines (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) out of the net and fired the ball into the left corner to give Brown a 1-0 lead.
Lanzire's goal proved to be all the Bears would need in handing the Friars their first loss of the 2001 season, however junior Caitlin Carey (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) wasted no time early in the second half in increasing Brown's lead. Just 4:20 into the second stanza, Carey scored on a rebounded ball that Haines had punched out.
Less than 10 minutes later, Carey and Lanzire took advantage of a two-on-one and Carey gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with a shot to the inside post. Just over five minutes later, sophomore Kristin Ferrell (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and senior Allyson Schwerdt (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) combined on a well-executed give-and-go to set up Ferrell's shot from 18 yards out. The ball sailed into the upper right corner, giving Brown an insurmountable 4-0 lead with 27:39 left to play.
With 19:59 remaining in the game, junior Kim Insalaco (Rochester, NY/Choate-Rosemary Hall), who is also a captain on the women's ice hockey team and playing her first season with the soccer team, found sophomore Michaela Sewall (Newton, MA/Milton Academy) who crossed the ball to classmate Hayley Sennott (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional). Sennott's lofted shot from about 20 yards out was the Bears fifth and final goal of the game.
The Friars had many scoring opportunities in the second half, taking four corner kicks and seven shots, but strong goal tending by sophomore Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy) kept the shutout alive. Senior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) stopped one Providence shot in the first half, while Gervais made six saves in the final 45 minutes. Haines made 11 saves for the Friars as Brown outshot Providence 26-10.
The Bears will travel to Cape Cod, MA this weekend as they participate in the ECAC Classic with Colgate, Georgetown and North Carolina State. Brown will face NC State on Friday, September 14 at 4:00 p.m. before playing Georgetown on Sunday, September 16 in a 2:00 p.m. game.
