Bears Fall to Marist, 2-1, in First Loss of Season
Sept. 8, 2006
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's soccer team (2-1-1) saw its unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday night, falling to visiting Marist, 2-1, in the Bears' first game of the Brown Classic.
Kristen Leonhard gave the Red Foxes an early 1-0 lead when she knocked in the rebound of her own shot. Leonard took Brown freshman goalie Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) on a one-on-one and fired a shot from point-blank range that Hogue saved. However, she couldn't corral the rebound and it bounced out to Leonhard, who knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the net just 6:16 into the contest.
Kate Fox added an insurance goal for Marist less than 10 minutes later, when she tapped a lose ball past Hogue in the 16th minute.
The Bears picked up the pace of play in the remainder of the half, controlling the flow, but had some unlucky breaks as senior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) drilled a shot off the cross-bar at 16:09. Just 10 minutes later, at 26:10, freshman Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) fired a shot from the top of the box that also hit the cross-bar as the Bears were kept off the board.
Brown continued to press in the second half, and came to within one just 4:34 into the half on a goal by junior Kerrilynn Carney (North Smithfield, RI). After a Marist foul just past midfield, Carney fired a direct kick from 40 yards out that sailed over Marist's Caitlin Nazarechuk and into the back of the net.
However, despite outshooting the Red Foxes 10-2 for the half and 19-6 for the game, the Bears couldn't net the tying goal, as they dropped their first game of the season.
Hogue recorded two saves in net for the Bears, who return to action on Sunday, September 10, when they host Minnesota at 12:00 noon. The Gophers picked up a 1-0 victory over Army in their first contest of the Brown Classic on Friday evening.
