Sept. 5, 2008
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's soccer team (0-1-0) opened its 2008 season with a 3-0 loss to 13th-ranked Boston College (3-1-0) on Friday evening in Newton, MA. Junior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA), back in net after missing the entire 2007 season with an injury, recorded a career-high 12 saves.
The Bears had the first chance of the game in the 24th minute when senior Lindsay Cunningham's (Cumberland, RI) attempt was just punched over the goal by BC goalie Jillian Mastroianni to keep the score tied at 0-0.
Six minutes later, the Eagles would score all they would need for the win when Caroline Walden capitalized on a corner kick from Caitlin Hiler and struck the ball low and to the near post by a diving Hogue at 30:48.
Boston College increased its lead to 2-0 just before halftime when Alaina Beyar beat Hogue for her first career goal.
Freshman Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ) had a chance to bring Brown to within 2-1 at 54:48, but her shot off a Bears' corner kick, headed for the far post, was headed out by a BC defender.
A Boston College goal at 71:18 by Gina Dimartino accounted for the 3-0 final. In addition to Lesbirel, three other members of the class of 2012 made their collegiate debuts, including Sarah Hebert-Seropian (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE) and Allison Kagawa (Mililani, HI), who both started, and Joanna Price (San Juan Capistrano, CA).
The Eagles outshot the Bears, 26-5, and also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Brown returns home on Sunday, September 7, to host Albany in a 6:00 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field, the Bears' only home game during the month of September.
