Bears' Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Sacred Heart in Home-Opener
Sept. 4, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sacred Heart (1-2) scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-3 victory over Brown (0-2) in a Northeast Regional Women's Soccer contest on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
With each team still searching for its first win and first goal of the 2005 season, Sacred Heart was the first to strike. The Pioneers opened the scoring at 18:09 of the first half when Lisa Burbige banked her shot off the right post and into the back of the net.
The Pioneers increased their lead to 2-0 just 6:25 later when Burbige fired a rocket past senior Hilary Wilson (Monterey, CA). In what was beginning to look like a run-away victory for Sacred Heart, the Pioneers added one more tally before the end of the first half, in which they outshot Brown, 12-3, to take a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
However, less than three minutes into the second half, senior Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA) was taken down in the box, setting up a Brown penalty kick. Senior Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA) placed the ball into the far corner of the net to bring Brown to within two goals, 3-1, at 47:20.
Just 42 seconds later, at 48:02, freshman Emily Geldwert (Larchmont, NY) scored her first career goal to bring the Bears to within one. Junior Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) used a long throw-in from behind the 50 to set up Schreck on the right sideline. Schreck crossed to Geldwert and she tapped the ball into the opposite corner, closing the gap to one goal.
However at 63:21, Katie Leahy scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, heading the ball over Wilson off a Sacred Heart direct kick.
Junior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) scored the Bears' third goal at 72:12 in a similar fashion to Brown's second goal. This time it was a LaVere direct kick that went to Schreck on the right side. Schreck pulled Pioneer goalie Ashley Mocarski out of the net, beat her in a one-on-one, and sent the ball across to Moos, who placed the ball into the open net.
However, that was as close as the Bears would get as they dropped their second straight contest.
Wilson recorded nine saves for Brown, which was outshot 18-13. The Bears return to action on Wednesday, September 7, when they host Boston University at 6:00 p.m.
