AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Mikela Waldman and freshman Brittany Montgomery each scored a goal in the first half, junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted her first shutout of the year, and Brown University women's soccer beat the University of Massachusetts, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field.

The Bears (5-2-0) netted goals in the 16th and 45th minutes to take a 2-0 lead on the host Minutewomen (2-4-1) at the break and tallied their second clean sheet as a team on the season.

Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) registered her team-leading sixth goal of the season and scored in back-to-back games for the second time this year. Montgomery (Lawrenceville, Ga.) notched her first collegiate goal.

Freshman Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) earned her first career assist with a helper on Montgomery's goal. Junior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and freshman Star White (Norfolk, Va.) each recorded an assist on Waldman's goal. White moved into a tie for the team lead with four assists on the year.

Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made six saves in her 15th career shutout and tallied her 21st career win with the victory (5-2-0).

Waldman opened the game's scoring at the 15:44 mark, driving a shot from the right edge of the box into the left side of the goal. White started the play, sending a centering pass to Story who found Waldman on the right wing.

Montgomery doubled the Bears' edge to 2-0 with three seconds left in the first half. After receiving a feed from Brown, Montgomery directed a one-time strike past the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area at 44:57.

In the second half, Montgomery nearly pushed Brown ahead 3-0 on two occasions around the hour mark. Her first attempt from the edge of the box required a diving save before her one-timed shot from 12 yards needed another parry.

In the final 15 minutes, the Bears cleared a dangerous corner in the 76th minute before Etzel turned aside two shots on goal inside of the final seven minutes. In the game's waning moments, both freshman Zeinab Kante (Dallas, Texas) and Waldman placed threatening shots on target from inside the box.

For the match, Brown led in shots (16-11) and shots on goal (11-6) while each team took four corner kicks.
