White Nets Goal, Women’s Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman forward Star White scored in the 87th minute, but Brown University women's soccer dropped a 3-1 decision to Providence College on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

The Bears (3-2-0) fell behind 3-0 in the first half as the visiting Friars (2-4-0) netted three goals in a 6:46 span between the 29th and 35th minutes to take the crosstown rivalry match-up.

"I think it was a tale of two halves," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Providence got the better of us in the first half. All three goals were scored in a span of 10 minutes where the wheels fell off the wagon a little bit, but it was great that our team bounced back in the second half."

White (Norfolk, Va.) posted her second goal of the season while juniors Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) each registered an assist.

On the Bears' scoring play, Phillips sent a throw in along the left sideline to Story who sent a through ball from the Bears' side of the field onto White. White ran onto the ball, touched the ball wide past the keeper, and slotted a left-footed shot into the empty net at 86:44.

Story notched her first assist of the season and the fourth helper of her career while Phillips tallied her first career point on her assist.

Katie Day started the scoring for the Friars in the 29th minute as she directed a penalty kick into the left side of the net at the 28:10 mark.

Hailee Duserick gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute as her long free kick from just over the midway line found its way into the back of the net at 34:00.

Allesandra Arace capped Providence's scoring 56 seconds later as her cross from the right side ricocheted into the goal at 34:56 after she received a pass along the right flank from Day.

Providence goalkeeper Shelby Hogan made six saves in the win (2-4-0) while Brown junior goalie Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) stopped five shots in the setback (3-2-0).

For the match, Brown led in shots (16-12) and corner kicks (8-7) while PC held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears fell to 20-9-0 all-time against the Friars.

Next, Brown hosts Lafayette College on Sunday at noon (ILN).
