EASTON, Pa. – Senior Carly Gould scored in the 10th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel stopped a penalty kick in the 88th minute, and Brown University women's soccer defeated Lafayette College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Oaks Stadium.
The Bears (3-1-1) emerged with the shutout victory over the Leopards (3-2-2) on the strength of Gould's strike less than 10 minutes into the match and on Etzel's critical save with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made six saves for her fourth shutout of the season and eighth of her career. On the penalty kick, Etzel read the shot, diving to her right to seal the win (3-1-1).
Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) stole the ball at the top of the box and slotted a shot into the left side of the goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. She posted her second tally of the season and 13th of her career at the 9:07 mark.
Brown's back four of juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomores Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) aided in the clean sheet.
Lafayette goalie Danielle Sedillo made five saves in the loss (3-2-2). Kelly O'Brien stopped one shot in the second half.
Brown created a few more chances than Lafayette in the first half, holding edges in shots (5-3), shots on goal (5-3), and corner kicks (4-1) while Etzel made three saves to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.
Gould generated three other chances in the opening half with a pair of shots and a dangerous cross. Grant and sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) each placed long-distance shots on goal.
Brown remained on the attack just prior to the hour mark as the Bears earned a pair of corners, Gould drove a shot on target that required a diving punch away, and Lehan sent a shot wide. On the other end, Etzel made an extended save to her left in the 61st minute.
In the 71st minute, Etzel made her fifth save of the match in between a pair of corner kicks for the Bears that resulted in two shots carrying over the crossbar.
Brown now leads the all-time series with Lafayette, 3-0-0. Brown held advantages in shots (10-7) and corner kicks (8-3).
