Women’s Soccer Battles Columbia to 0-0 Overtime Draw
NEW YORK – Seniors Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) and MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.) split time in net to earn the combined shutout as the Brown University women's soccer team drew even against Columbia, 0-0, on Saturday at Columbia Soccer Stadium.
Brown, which won four straight heading into the contest, moves to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Ivy action. Columbia stands at 5-3-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in league play.
Brown outshot the Lions by a margin of 12-10 and put more shots on goal, 5-2. Sophomore Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.), who had three shots in the contest, took the first shot for the Bears at 9:46, but the scoring chance was denied by Columbia keeper Allison Spencer for the save. The Bears enjoyed another quality opportunity at 22:33 when junior Annie Gillen (San Clemente, Calif.) took the team's first corner kick, but sophomore Charlotte Beach (New Haven, Conn.) had a shot sail just wide to keep the game scoreless. Brown outshot the home side, 8-3, in the opening 45 minutes.
After a scoreless second half, the game headed to extra time, where the Bears registered just one shot in the first overtime period. Freshman Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.) posted a shot in the 95th minute, only to be turned away by a team save. Columbia took the lone shot of the second overtime period, but Natalie Melo's bid was wide, as the game remained scoreless after the final horn.
Junior Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) posted a team-high four shots in the contest, while Columbia held a 10-9 edge in corner kicks, including seven in the second half.
Brown returns home on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Princeton at 4 p.m. in the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
