Berg Lifts Women’s Soccer Over Dartmouth, 1-0, in Ivy Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Kiersten Berg (Salt Lake City, Utah) broke a scoreless contest with 13 minutes left in regulation to lift the Brown women's soccer team past Dartmouth, 1-0, in the Ivy League opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field.

Brown has won three straight games and moves to 5-2-0 on the season, while the Big Green fall to 3-4-1 overall.

Dartmouth maintained consistent pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting the Bears by a margin of 9-5, but senior keeper Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) kept the Big Green at bay with eight saves in the stanza as the teams remained tied, 0-0, at halftime.

Brown was able to break through the Big Green backline in the second half, culminating with a goal by Berg in the 77th minute to break the scoreless tie. After sophomore Charlotte Beach (New Haven, Conn.) lifted a pass from Brown territory across midfield, Berg picked up the play and travelled down the left side. She then maneuvered around a final defender and chipped a shot past Dartmouth keeper Tatiana Saunders and into the bottom right of the net to push the Bears in front, 1-0. Sophomore Sarah Moody (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Dartmouth continued to attack throughout the remainder of the contest and secured a corner kick in the 83rd minute, but the Brown defense deflected a pair of soft headers following the corner as the home side held on for the victory.

Senior MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.) relieved Bledsoe in the second half and made two stops to earn the victory, while Saunders made seven saves on the other end for the Big Green. Junior Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) led the Bears with five shots, but the Big Green outshot the Bears, 16-12, overall.
