Cross Leads Women’s Soccer Past Sacred Heart, 2-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) registered a pair of second half goals to lead the Brown women's soccer team over Sacred Heart, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Brown captured its second straight victory and improves to 4-2-0 on the season, while Sacred Heart drops to 3-6-0 overall.
The two teams were fairly even in the opening half, as Brown held a slight 6-5 edge in shots, but the score remained 0-0 at intermission.
Cross put the Bears on the board early in the second half with a tally in the 57th minute. Freshman Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.) traveled down the right flank and sent a cross into the box, where senior Mika Siegelman (Piedmont, Calif.) took a shot from about five yards out, but the shot was blocked and trickled in front of the net. Cross was in position around the play and tapped in the rebound to the left of Sacred Heart keeper Sydney Judkins for the lead, 1-0.
Brown maintained its momentum on the offensive end with another goal less than 10 minutes later at 64:21. Once again, Calas sent a long cross from the right side into the box, where Cross was waiting and drilled the bottom left of the net for her second tally of the game to give the home side the 2-0 lead and eventual victory.
Senior Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded four saves for the Bears in the opening 45 minutes, before giving way to fellow senior MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.), who made two stops to earn the win. Judkins made six stops on the other end for the Pioneers.
Brown outshot the Pioneers by a margin of 15-11 in the contest and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Cross paced all players with six shots and leads the team with three goals on the season.
