Women’s Soccer Falls to St. John’s, 4-0, in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Rachel Daly netted three goals, including two in the first half, to lead St. John's past the Brown women's soccer team, 4-0, in the Bears' home opener Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. With the loss, the Bears drop to 1-1 on the season, while the Red Storm improve to 6-0 overall.

St. John's opened up the scoring in the first minute of action when Daly was tripped inside the box and buried the penalty kick in the bottom left side of the net to give the visitors the early 1-0 advantage.

Daly scored again in the 30th minute to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead. Amy Marron maneuvered around a pair of defenders on the left flank and sent a floater in front of the net to Daly, who hit a one-timer past the reach of Brown keeper Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) for the two-goal advantage.

St. John's tacked on the third goal of the stanza with just six seconds left in the half. On a Red Storm corner kick, Deanna Murino was able to control the ball in the midst of the flurry of players in front of the net, and tapped it past Bledsoe to give the visitors the 3-0 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Daly scored her third and final goal at 76:08 on a feed from Caitlyn McLaughlin for the 4-0 lead and personal hat trick.

Freshman Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) enjoyed the team's best chance with less than two minutes left in the contest as she sent a screaming shot from deep, but Ellen Conway was able to get her fingertips on the ball and deflect the shot over the net.

Seniors Bledsoe and MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.) split time in net with each playing a half. Bledsoe took the loss and made four saves to move to 1-1 on the season. St. John's won the battle for corner kicks at 11-9 and outshot the Bears by a 15-7 margin.

Brown returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 12 when they play host to Northeastern in a 7 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
