Women’s Soccer Closes Season with 1-0 Loss at Yale
NEW HAVEN, CT – Yale (8-7-2) opened the game's scoring just 5:08 after the opening whistle and survived a Brown comeback attempt to earn a 1-0 win over the Bears' women's soccer team (7-9-1) in the season finale for both squads Sunday at Reese Stadium. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Thursday night's Ivy League contest, as this afternoon's game counted as a non-league match.
Mary Kubiuk provided all the offense her team would need when she took a pass from Annie Hull, made a move to get around the Brown defense, and then fired a rocket into the top of the net, beating sophomore Mallory Yant (Fenton, MO), who was making her first career start.
The Bears nearly tied the game in the 11th minute when senior Diana Ohrt (Simi Valley, CA) headed a corner kick taken by sophomore Annie Gillen (San Clemente, CA) towards the goal. However, Elise Wilcox made a diving save to keep Brown off the board.
Despite outshooting Yale, 11-8, including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal, the Bears could not solve Wilcox (five saves) or Rachel Ames (two saves), who played the final 45 minutes.
Junior MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) played the second half in the Brown net and recorded one save, combining with Yant for two saves on the afternoon.
The game marked the final career contest for Brown's three seniors – captain Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA), Rachael Pack (Park City, UT), and Ohrt.
