Bears Fall to Dartmouth, 2-1

Bears Fall to Dartmouth, 2-1

HANOVER, NH – Dartmouth (6-2-0, 1-0-0) scored a goal in each half and built a 2-0 lead en route to a 2-1 win over the Brown women's soccer team (6-2-0, 0-1-0) in the Ivy opener for both squads Sunday afternoon at Burnham Field. The loss snaps the Bears' four-game winning streak and marked Dartmouth's fourth straight victory.

Playing with the wind at its back, Dartmouth controlled the play during the early going, outshooting Brown, 4-1, in the opening 18 minutes. The Big Green nearly grabbed a 1-0 lead just 15:05 into the game when Marina Moschitto volleyed a cross from inside the six-yard box off the cross bar.

The attempt appeared to give the hosts some momentum, as just 57 seconds later, Chrissy Lozier fired a low shot from the left side of the box through traffic, beating junior Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, OH) to the right corner.

The Bears had their first opportunity with 26 minutes left in the first half, earning back-to-back corner kicks. Junior Alison Mullin (Boulder, CO) connected on a header on the first corner, but it was deflected wide of the net, and the Bears failed to generate anything on the second corner.

Corey Delaney nearly made it 2-0 six minutes later, but her shot from the top-left of the box went just wide of the net to the far side.

The Bears' first shot on goal did not come until the 39th minute when junior Maddie Wiener (Portland, OR) had a long-range attempt that was easily saved by Tatiana Saunders.

Brown had the wind to start the second half and immediately began generating chances. Just 1:36 after the break, sophomore Chloe Cross (Seattle, WA) ripped a high shot from 20 yards out that Saunders got a piece of, deflecting in over the crossbar.

However, Dartmouth took any momentum the Bears might have been building away two minutes after Cross' shot when Moschitto one-timed a beautiful through ball from Delaney into the upper netting from point-blank range.

The Bears got one back at 53:05 when junior Emily Wingrove (Westwood, MA) knocked in the rebound of a shot by senior Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA) on a Brown corner kick. Marshall's attempt came from the left side of the box and forced Saunders to dive to make the save. Saunders couldn't corral the loose ball and Wingrove fired it into the partially open net for her first of the season.

With the score still 2-1 in favor of Dartmouth and with under 18 minutes left, junior MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) made a diving stop on a breakaway bid by Tasha Wilkins. On the ensuing corner kick, Allison Yeager nearly gave her team a 3-1 lead, but her header hit the post and Brown was able to escape the threat.

The two teams battled largely in the middle third of the field during the remainder of the game and Dartmouth survived a few last minute chances from the Bears to hold on for the victory.

Dartmouth edged Brown in shots, 11-10, while each team had five shots on goal. The Bears earned six corners to Dartmouth's five. Saunders recorded four saves for the Big Green, while Bledsoe (2) and Barrett (1) combined for three saves for Brown.

The Bears continue Ivy League play next Saturday, September 29th, when they host Columbia in a 4:00 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
