BURLINGTON, VT – Junior Mika Siegelman (Piedmont, CA) lifted the Brown women's soccer team (3-1-0) to a 1-0 win over Vermont (1-5-0), as the Bears rebounded from Thursday's loss to Providence with the victory on Saturday.
Siegelman collected the ball from junior Emily Wingrove (Westwood, MA) in the midfield, split the Vermont defense, and was able to beat UVM goalie Ally Ramos with a low shot to the left side in a one-on-one situation.
Still leading, 1-0, midway through the second half, the Bears had a great opportunity to add to their lead. After Sarah Leiby dove to make a save on an attempt by sophomore Chloe Cross (Seattle, WA), the ball bounced out to senior Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA), who was following the play. Marshall was taken down inside the box, awarding Brown a penalty kick. Siegelman stepped up to take the PK, but could not add to the score, pushing the kick just left of the net.
Vermont tested junior goalie MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) in the second half with a couple of shots from distance, but Barrett was able to make the saves, finishing with two in the final 45 minutes, as she and classmate Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, OH) combined for four saves throughout the game.
Ramos and Leiby totaled three saves for Vermont. The Catamounts outshot Brown, 11-5, and each team had three corners in the game.
Brown continues action on Thursday, September 13th when it travels to Boston to face Northeastern in a 6:00 p.m. contest. The Bears' next home game is a 4:00 p.m. contest against Sacred Heart on Sunday, September 16th.
