Marshall's Pair Help Lead Brown Past Coastal Carolina, 3-1

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA) scored a pair of goals just eight minutes apart to help lead the Brown women's soccer team (2-0-0) to a 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina in the second day of competition at the Liberty Invitational. The Bears led from start to finish in the game, as Marshall's pair extended Brown's lead to 3-0 with just over 10 minutes left to play before the Chanticleers got a late goal to end the shutout bid.

Battling the hot and humid weather in western Virginia and playing with only two subs, the Bears fought through exhaustion to pick up their second consecutive win of the young season. Despite getting outshot, 10-5, during the opening 45 minutes, the Bears held a 1-0 lead going into the break after sophomore Kiersten Berg's (Salt Lake City, UT) first goal of the year.

Junior Diana Ohrt (Simi Valley, CA) took a Bears' free kick in the 33rd minute and Berg was there to head the ball past Saundra Baron for the 1-0 lead at 32:30. Sophomore Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, OH) stopped all five shots she faced to help preserve the lead for Brown.

The tables turned slightly in the second half, as Brown outshot Coastal Carolina, 12-10, and scored two more goals, both from Marshall. Marshall's first, which would prove to be the game-winner, came following a great run by senior Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ). Lesbirel carried the ball up the left side and worked around her defender before crossing the ball into the box. Marshall had sprinted into the play from 25 yards out and buried her shot to the left corner, giving Brown a 2-0 lead at 71:27.

Just 7:33 later, Marshall struck again, increasing Brown's lead to 3-0. This time, it was Berg with the assist, as Marshall lobbed a shot to the left corner that bounced off the post and into the right side of the net with exactly 11 minutes left in the game.

Just 3:58 later, Coastal Carolina got on the board, ending Brown's season-opening shutout streak at 172:58. After back-to-back shots by Rylie Johnson hit first the crossbar and then the post, Christina Stern picked up the rebound and tapped the ball past sophomore MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY), who made three saves in the second half, to account for the 3-1 final.

The Bears continue action on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00, when they host cross-town rival Providence College in their 2011 home opener.
