Women's Soccer to Face Liberty in 2011 Season Opener

The Brown women's soccer team is set to begin its 2011 campaign this weekend when it travels to Liberty to take part in the Liberty Invitational. The Bears will face the host Flames on Friday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. and then meet Coastal Carolina on Sunday, September 4 at 12:00 noon.

ABOUT BROWN: The Bears lost their top scorer from 2010 to graduation, but return the next six leading scorers, including sophomores Mika Siegelman (Piedmont, CA) and Maddie Wiener (Portland, OR), who were tied for second on the team a year ago with nine points each. Brown also returns the bulk of its defense with 2010 All-Ivy honorees Allison Kagawa (Mililani, HI) and Gloria Chun (Irvine, CA) back to anchor the backfield. The sophomore goalie tandem of MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) and Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, OH) also returns this season after splitting all goaltending responsibilities in 2010 and combining to help Brown post a 1.11 goals against average. Other returning players expected to help lead the team include senior captain Sarah Hebert-Seropian (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE), who will help control the midfield, sophomore Louisa Pitney (Washington, DC), who was fourth on the team in scoring with seven points last year, senior Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ), sophomore Kiersten Berg (Salt Lake City, UT), and junior Diana Ohrt (Simi Valley, CA). Junior Elisa Marshall (North Andover, MA), Rachael Pack (Park City, UT), and sophomore Alison Mullin (Lafayette, CO) will also be looked upon to provide major contributions on the field.

ABOUT LIBERTY: The Flames (0-1-1) enter their own tournament following a 1-1 tie with Longwood in their second contest of the young season. After opening the 2011 campaign with a 9-1 loss to #6 Virginia, Liberty earned a tie against the Lancers in its home opener. Seniors Aimee Luurtsema and Silvia Bentancourt have each scored one goal this year, while sophomore Megan Warner has one assist. Luurtsema also leads the team with four shots. Junior Karen Blocker has played all 200 minutes in net and has a 4.50 goals against average with a .474 save percentage, making nine saves on 19 shots.

ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA: The Chanticleers (0-2-1) enter the Liberty Invitational following a 1-1 tie with Georgia Southern on August 28. Coastal Carolina dropped its first two games of the season, falling to Jacksonville, 2-1, and North Florida, 5-0, during the North Florida Tournament August 19-21. Coastal Carolina, which will face Valparaiso on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Liberty Invitational, is led by sophomores Christina Stern and Alyssa Clark, who both have scored one goal. Stern and freshman Rylie Johnson share the team lead with three shots. Freshman Saundra Baron has played all 290 minutes in goal for the Chanticleers and has earned a 2.48 goals against average and a .691 save percentage, stopping 13 of 21 shots.
