Bears and Big Red Play to Scoreless Draw

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's soccer team outshot Cornell (6-6-1, 1-3-1), 20-6, but had little to show for it, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Bears' goalies Amber Bledsoe (Withamsville, OH) and MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) helped Brown post its sixth shutout of the year, while combining to stop three shots.

The Bears had two quick shots in the opening five minutes, and then another pair roughly 11 minutes into the game. However, three of the four were from well outside of the box and routine saves for Cornell goalie Megan Bartlett.

The Big Red had the first scoring opportunity when, at 14:04, Maneesha Chitanvis got inside the Bears' defense and had just Bledsoe to beat. However, Bledsoe dove to her left to save the one-on-one attempt, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.

Brown would outshoot Cornell, 5-1, the rest of the half, but only two of the five were put on cage, as the other three sailed either wide or high of the net.

At the other end of the field, while the Big Red were only credited with one shot, Bledsoe was forced to make two big plays in helping to keep the ball out of the net. She was instrumental in grabbing crosses, including one with about 20 minutes left in the half when she charged out of the box, beating a Cornell player to a lose ball and pulling it out of the air to end the threat.

The Bears came out with energy at the start of the second half and took three quick shots in the first three minutes, two of them wide and a third blocked by the Cornell defense.

Twice, Brown was within inches of knocking in the game's first goal over the next seven minutes. Freshman Louisa Pitney (Washington, DC) set classmate Maddie Wiener (Portland, OR) up perfectly with a low back-door cross. However the ball was just far enough ahead of Wiener that she couldn't get a foot on it, as it went out of bounds.

Then, after a series of dangerous crosses by the Bears, Wiener found freshman Emily Wingrove (Westwood, MA) on a Brown corner kick, but Wingrove's header caromed off the crossbar, as the score remained 0-0 10 minutes into the second half.

Things settled down following the frantic 10-minute span, with Brown outshooting Cornell, 4-2, during the rest of regulation. Bartlett and Barrett each recorded one save for their respective teams, as Bartlett also punched out a corner by Wiener in the 69th minute and then a dangerous cross by Wiener in the 84th minute to help keep Brown off the board.

Overall, Brown held a 20-6 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Brown also had five corner kicks to Cornell's one.

The Bears return to action next Saturday, October 30th, when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
