DiGioia and Vitkus Named 2009 Captains
Dec. 17, 2008
PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown women's lacrosse head coach Keely McDonald has announced that seniors Noelle DiGioia (Pittsburgh, PA) and Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) have been named captains for the 2009 season. Both have been valuable contributors since their arrival at Brown in the fall of 2005, earning All-Ivy honors in 2008, and will look to lead the Bears both on and off the field.
"Lauren and Noelle are born leaders," said McDonald. "With the support of a dynamic senior class, they have demonstrated tremendous leadership this year and are ready to take Brown women's lacrosse to the next level. The 2009 team is proud to have them at the helm."
A defender, DiGioia was an Honorable Mention All-Ivy honoree this past spring. During her career, she has played nearly every minute of every game, starting all 48 games over the past three seasons. In 2008, DiGioia led the Bears with 17 caused turnovers and 36 ground balls, finishing the season ranked second in the Ivy League with 2.25 ground balls per game. In addition, she was tied for third on the team in 2008 with 15 draw controls, despite staring behind the restraining line for the draw. She enters her senior season ranked among Brown's all-time top-15 for draw controls with 43 in three seasons.
A midfielder, Vitkus was a Second Team All-Ivy selection this past spring, leading the Bears scoring efforts with 40 points, 31 goals, and nine assists. A top threat on the circle, Vitkus also led the Bears with 41 draw controls, which is second all-time at Brown for draw controls in a season, and ranked second in the Ivy League last year with 2.56 draw controls per game. During the season, she posted at least one point in all but one of Brown's games. A three-year starter in the midfield, Vitkus was fourth on the team in scoring as a sophomore with 22 points and was second on the team with 18 goals. She has played in all 48 games over the past three years, staring 47, and enters her senior season ranked sixth all-time at Brown with 72 career draw controls.
The Bears will open their 2009 season on February 25th with a 3:00 p.m. away game at Sacred Heart. Brown's home opener is slated for February 28th at 3:00 against Hofstra.
