Jan. 30, 2004

PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown senior women's lacrosse defender, Debbie Mendel (West Newton, MA) was named to the Canadian National Lacrosse Team, by virtue of her play during a three-day open tryout in Toronto, ONT, from January 2-4th.

Mendel is one of 24 players selected to the 2004 elite squad, including 12 members of the 2001 World Cup team, in which Canada took fourth, losing to England in the Bronze Medal game.

The first event is scheduled for February 13-15th, where the team will play against Notre Dame and Northwestern. The National Team is also scheduled to play in the USLA Tournament from May 28-30th at Lehigh. There are several other commitments throughout the summer and next year, in preparation for the 2005 World Cup, which will be held next summer from June 23-July 4 at the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD.

While not born in Canada, Mendel has dual citizenship with Canada and the United States because her father is Canadian, growing up in Montreal. Her family still lives in Montreal.

A three-year starter on the Brown lacrosse team, Mendel is concentrating in Development Studies and is hoping to work for a few years before possibly going to grad school.
