The women's lacrosse team defeated Boston University (5-10), 9-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Boston's Nickerson Field, improving to 5-7 on the season.
Brown was led by sophomore Katie Russell (San Francisco, CA), who scored three goals, and senior Niki Caggiano (Freeport, NY) who made 22 saves in net, including holding the Terriers scoreless for nearly 26 minutes during the middle of the game.
Boston University took a 1-0 lead just 2:46 into the contest, but Russell responded with her first goal at 5:09 to knot the game at 1-1. Sophomore Katie Zabel (Ellicott City, MD) earned an assist on the goal and junior Bekah Rottenberg (Colrain, MA) scored on a free position shot at 8:43 to give Brown a 2-1 lead.
Boston University scored two of their own to knot the game again, but Rottenberg added another free position goal at 19:05 and Passano scored her second at 26:39 to give Brown a 6-4 advantage at the half, a lead the Bears never relinquished.
Neither team was able to score for the first half of the second stanza as both goalies made stop-after-stop. However, at 14:26, junior Courtney Johnson (Falmouth, MA) fed Russell, who scored her second of the game, increasing Brown's lead to 7-4. The two teams traded goals with sophomore Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO) scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal at 17:28 on a free position. The Terriers added one more to again come to within one, but Russell added her third at 23:25 to secure the win for Brown.
Brown continues action on Saturday afternoon when the Bears host #1 Princeton in a 4:00 contest. The game, which will be held at Stevenson Field, is Brown's final home game of the season.
